Plastic pollution – a tale of social injustice

This roundtable conversation aims to offer a global perspective to the issue of plastic and the associated injustices, bringing together experts from different parts of the world. The event coincides with the forthcoming collaborative exhibition Plastic: Remaking Our World, bringing together product design, graphics, architecture and fashion collections from the V&A and Vitra Design Museum, as well as collections all over the world.

This conversation will feature as one of the essays in the catalogue produced by the The V&A Museum and Vitra Design Museum to accompany the exhibition.

Speakers:

Suzanne Dhaliwal (UK), a Climate Justice Creative, Campaigner, Researcher, Lecturer in Environmental Justice and Trainer in Creative Strategies for Decolonisation.

Erica Cirino (US), a science writer and artist and author of Thicker Than Water: The Quest for Solutions to the Plastic Crisis (published by Island Press, in October 2021).

Ama van Dantzig (Netherlands / Ghana), co-founder of Dr. Monk, an international research and ideation studio tackling issues on global inequality and sustainability working between the Netherlands and Ghana.

Nihan Temiz Atas (Turkey), a biodiversity projects lead from Greenpeace Mediterranean.

Chair:

Sumitra Upham (UK) London-based curator and educator, currently Head of Public Programmes at the Crafts Council. Her work is focused on materials and making as social and political tools for shaping cultural narratives.
